'tis'Tis a general Rule among all the skilful in this science
that Medals with two Heads are almost always choice:
as for Instance that of Augustus on the Reverse
of Julius &c.
see a little Book intitled the Know-
ledge of Medals: p. 42.

Julius Cæsar was certainly the first, that obtained
the Priviledge of setting his Head upon Money: and
consequently should have been the most desirous
of so doing: Nevertheless his Head is not once found
upon any large Copper Medals: Those whereon

* Julius Cæsar is said to have been the first
Roman, who stamped his own Image upon
the Coin Dion Lib: 44 says the Senate
decreed him this Honour: and there
are several Coins of his extant: But this
particular One, however it is generally
receaued one of Julius's, and so described
by Occo p. 16, ought rather to be called
one of Augustus, it'sits having Augustus
Head on one side with no young Face,
speaks it evidently not to be struck, un-
til Augustus was in Power both to
canonize his Father, and to record
himself his Son.

Bargrave The Impression on this Coin is set on a
little too much on one side, by which, the
P which should have been on the left Hand
in the Head side was not made.

It is the Nemansus or Nismes Coin.
sStruck says Occo in Honour of Augustus upon
his conquering Eqypt. The Crocodile being the
Emblem of Egypt, and his being chained to the
Palm the Emblem of Victory, signifies Egypt's 014 [blank page] 015 Imperatorial brass Coins.

they were Colleagues in Power.

or 3d Time, both which Times he was
Colleague with Augustus. 27. & 28 yeares
before Oct: or about 8 years after when Augustus
took him to be his associate in the Tribu-
nicial Power.

Cæsars reducing Egypt was in his 4 Consulship
about 30 yeares before Oct. M. Licinius was then his
Colleague. Why should Agrippas Image be joined
with Augustus's in a coin relating to the Reduction
of Egypt, at the Time of which Agrippa was
not in an office that intitled him to have
his Image upon the public Coin? or why
should the Money belonging to the Colony at
Nismes, record the Reduction of Egypt, more
than any other achievement of Augustus.

That the Colony at Nismes was an
Augustan Colony appears from an Inscripti-
on in Gruber.

If Augustus planted this Colony at any
Time when he admitted his Friend and
Favourite Agrippa to be his Colleague in
Power, this may afford a good Reason for
Agrippa's Head being stamped together 016 [blank page] 017 Imperatorial brass Coins
with Augustus's upon this Coin. And if
they planted this Colony with Inhabitants
some from Egypt, and some from Syria or
Indea, of which the Palm was the Emblem
as the Crocodile was of Egypt, they may
herein be very significantly said to have
chained the Crocodile to the Palm Tree,
and a better Reason appear for those
Emblems being upon this Coin, than what
are commonly given.

The other being 8 grains lighter than

Brass being broke off it.

Vaillant describes a Nismes Agrippa and
Augustus which seems to be of a different
Impression from both these, and had upon
it marks of the Duumvirs, which caused
him to think it not struck until Caligulas
Times. If his account of his Coin be true:

This Coin seems to be Iron: not that any
Roman Coins were originally known to be
of this Metal: but the Romans both in
the Common Wealth and the Empire
had false Coins which passed for silver but
were only Iron plated over with silver, of which
this probably was one: Savot found by Trial
that some silver Coins of the Roman would
follow the Loadstone: they were undoubtedly
of this sort., and accordingly Occo describes

Bargrave The Coin (says Occo. p. 522) seems to have been
called sacred, in the Sense in which, whilst the
Republic was supported, the Tribunes of the People
were said to bee so., that is, it was and ought to be
inviolate: and there was a proper Punishment
against diminishers or debasers of the Coin to
keep it so.
108 [blank page] 109 Imperatorial Brass Coins
I should think the Goddess Moneta here
stamped with her Scales & Cornicopia a very
expressive Emblem to hint that what was
ordered in it'sits due Weight, by the Divinity,
ought not by any to be altered or varied from,
and that Plenty & Happiness to the Public,
was in one Hand of the Goddess, whilst the
Scales duely poized were inviolate in her
other.

Thus Dufresne writes the Rev: of the

the Rev of this and therefore thô the

think they may be supposed to have been

DN CONSTANTI ................. from this one
wd think this Coin a Constantine: but the
Head does not resemble either of the Constant-
tines: and I do not find that Julian took
the name of Constantinus or any name like it.
His Titles were FL. CLAVDIVS IVLIANVS.

The Reverse is a Warrior on Foot directing his
Javelin against an Horseman, with his Horse
falling to the Ground.
FEL TEMP ..................
Dufresne describes this Rev: upon a Coin of Julians

Constantine -- and a coin

I shd think CONSTANTI. might prossibly be
filled up Constantinopolis as in No. 232. , 233.
but here is DN. Dominus noster, which shews it
be the Emperors name & not the Cities.

I cannot tell what to determine of this
Coin,; the Head speaks it to be Julians. itIt
shd be inquired how he came to put CONSTAN
