Description of institution: A mine in North Yorkshire situated nearby to Windegg Lead Level, and close to Peat Moor Hill:
John Bathurst, of London, leased the Arkengarthdale mineral rights from the City of London in 1654 and began to displace miners. He purchased the manor [of Grinton] two years later but the minerals were excluded. Bathurst’s accounts for 1657-58, show that the miners were working on piece rate, at so much per load of ore. They paid all the working costs and Bathurst transported ore from the mines, which were in the Windegg/Tanner Rake and Moulds Side areas, and smelted it. (Gill, 47-48)
