Historically part of Surrey, it is now part of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. In the late seventeenth-century, there were clay pits in the area, which were the source of fossils for John Woodward (Brayley, 136). Woodward also refers to "Richmond-Wells" and Petiver refers to wells at>/i> Richmond.
