Bodleian Library, Oxford University, Oxford

Date:Oct 1709 Author (in assoc. with a ms or print source)Thomas Hearne (1678 [bap.]-1735) Mentions or referencesJohn D'Oyly (bap. 17 Nov. 1640-13 Apr 1709) Scribe (in assoc. with a ms or print source)Richard Rawlinson (3 Feb 1690-6 Apr 1755) Annotation:This is a copy of Thomas Hearne's list, a manuscript that is now lost.

Hearne's original list, as described by Gunther (vol. 3, p. 258), was composed in stages. The first part of the list, ending with no. 274, was compiled at a point in time before 19 May 1705, which is the accession date attached to no. 275. This first part of the list began with a table and drawers (presumably in the centre of the room) and then proceeded counter-clockwise around the perimeter of the room, beginning with the south wall. The continuation of the catalogue did not follow this spatial logic. Some of the items in nos. 275-379 were items missed in the compiling of the first part of the inventory, and others were new acquisitions. Most of nos. 380-86 were acquired in 1708-9, and nos. 387-415 were items acquired 1709-13. The final item in Hearne's original, no. 415, was acquired in 13 Feb 1712/13.

When Rawlinson made his copy in Oct 1709, Hearne's list had gone as far as no. 386. With no. 387, then, Rawlinson's copy departs from Hearne's, being his own additions to the inventory. These three items appear in no other documents related to the collection.

The arrangement of the collection seems not to have changed from 1675 to 1705. Gunther notes that "[a] comparison of the lists shows that the exhibits continued for the most part to occupy the same parts of the room" (p. 258). [DO MY OWN ANALYSIS].
