Charles de l'Écluse (1525/6 - 1609)
Alias Carolus [alias] ClusiusDutch humanist and one of the most important botanists of the Renaissance. Became chair of botany in Leiden in 1593 where he established the botanical garden. His Rariorum Plantarum Historia includes elegant illustrations, whose preparation he himself supervised. "He is said to have described about 500 new species, a considerable number of them being alpine kinds" (Isely 44).
