Paul Herman (30 Jun 1646 - 29 Jan 1695)

German-born physician and botanist and director of the botanical garden at University of Leiden. Identified in Phil. Trans. (1683) as Dr. P. Herman, Professor at Leiden (vol. 13, no. 145, p. 103). Newly graduated from medical school at Padua in 1670, he went to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) as a ship's medical officer with the Dutch East India Company. From this journey he gathered material for his collection. A catalogue of this collection was not published until 1717, under the title Musaeum Zeylanicum sive Catalogus plantarum Zeylana sponte nascentium, observatorum et descriptarum.
