Charles Howard (1536 - 1624)

Alias Howard of Effingham
Statesman and Lord High Admiral under Elizabeth I and James I, he commanded the English forces during the battles against the Spanish Armada and was chiefly responsible for the victory that saved England from invasion by the Spanish Armada. Referred to by Platter as "the Admiral" or as "mylord Admiral," Howard gives Platter a letter that grants him and his party access to royal residences ("not only the gardens, large apartments, chapels and chambers, but also the small royal cabinets and the treasures they contain, all of which we afterwards from time to time enjoyed (Platter, 198).
