The John Bargrave Collection
Thomas Fotherby ( - fl. 1671)
Meric Casaubon's collection was handed over to Fotherby to hold for two years after Casaubon's death and then deliver to the Cathedral Library, which he did in 1673. Fotherby gave a receipt for the items to John Dawling, Casaubon's executor.Given his family connection to the Cathedral, this is probably the Thomas Fotherby (c. 1609-27 Nov 1674), son of Martin Fotherby who was prebend of Canterbury and then Bishop of Salisbury and nephew of Charles Fotherby was Archdeacon of Canterbury and then Dean of Canterbury. Thomas Fotherby is buried in Canterbury Cathedral, under this inscription: "Here lieth the Body of Thomas FOTHERBY Esq. son of Martin, sometime Bishop of Sarum, he married Elizabeth Daughter of Robert MOYLE of Buckwel Esq. by whom he left three children, Thomas, Priscilla and Margaret. Aged 65 Yeares he died Novr 27 Anno Dom. 1674." Other Links: www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/19/091.htm - Relevant locations: Lived at or near Canterbury
