John Smith (bap. 1580 - d. 1631)

Soldier and colonial governor. Bequeathed half of his books to John Tradescant the elder, the other half to one Thomas Packer (Fuller, 195 n.85). Leith-Ross says it is possible that the "Mr. Smith" named as a benefactor in Musaeum Tradescantianum "was the adventurous and colourful Captain John Smith" (180). MacGregor suggests whether this is the Captain John Smith "cannot be assumed with any certainty" (25).
