Nicholas, the Younger Staphorst ( - fl. 1701)

Botanist, collector, and son of Nicolaus Staphorst, who was director of the Chemical Laboratory of the Royal College of Physicians in London. The younger Staphorst travelled to South Africa, West India and West Africa in 1700-1701 where he attempted to collect plants for James Petiver; letters from Staphorst survive from the Cape of Good Hope and Surat (Zeven, 151-2). Specimens from Guinea supplied by Staphorst eventually entered the Sloane herbarium (ibid., 152). Roles: Botanist
