University of Edinburgh Library (c. 1579 - )

Founded three years before the foundation of the university with "a bequest of 276 theological books from Clement Littill, an advocate who left his collection to the town in 1580" ("University of Edinburgh Library," Wikipedia). In the seventeenth century, the library was also home to a collection of curious objects donated by patrons:
In the early nineteenth century many of the curiosities and specimens were put into a museum which had been specially provided for the purpose in the new university building designed by Robert Adam. The collection rapidly grew, as if to fill its new quarters, and soon included stock museum pieces such as large, stuffed animals (Finlayson, 110).
