Walter Stonehouse (c. 1597 - 17 Jul 1655)

Botanist, gardener, and numismatists, whose collection of coins and medals was acquired (after his death) by Lord Fairfax. Fairfax's collection was then purchased by John Thoresby and inherited by his son, Ralph. Ralph Thoresby also had in his possession a manuscript by Stonehouse titled "Nummorum Antiquorum Thesaurus." Stonehouse maintained a garden "well stocked with plants," and in 1648, he "was in correspondence with" William Howe, to whom he sent "dried specimens of Trifolium" (Jeffers, 102-3). He was part of a "literary circle" associated with Sir John Jackson of Hickleton which also included Sir Henry Wotton (Macray, 148). He was rector of Darfield from 1631. Roles: Botanist
