The John Bargrave Collection
William Stonestreet (1659 - 1716)
Clergyman, antiquary, and collector of coins, fossils, shells, and other artefacts and naturalia. He was an active participant in a network of collectors and collections. He exchanged objects with Richard Richardson. He and William Nicolson, who admired Stonestreet's collection of shells, fossils, and coins, visited William Courten and his collection. On a trip to London in 1701, collector Ralph Thoresby visited "[t]he very courteous Parson Stonestreet," describing his "good collection of Roman coins, and a most surprising one of shells, a thousand several sorts from all parts of the world, curious for their form, size, colour &c" (Diary, 1.343). After his death, Stonestreet's medals were sold at auction. William Sherard acquired his mosses, and Sir Hans Sloane acquired other items.
