The John Bargrave Collection
John Bagford (1650/1 - 5 May 1716)
Antiquary, writer, bibliographer, book collector, and bookseller. Bagford showed Courten some ancient coins he had discovered, which were "much esteem'd" by him ("A letter to the Publisher written by the ingenious Mr. John Bagford" printed by Hearne in Leland's Collecanea, 1715, p.lix). He compiled vast materials for an unfinished "Historical Account of the Art of Typography" (British Museum website). Bagford sold volumes of medieval manuscript fragments to such collectors as Samuel Pepys, Humphrey Wanley, Hans Sloane, and Peter Le Neve (Love, 75). He is probably the same John Bagford who gave James Petiver a fossil for his collection.
