View Larger MapDescription of institution: A valley on the east side of the Pennines in North Yorkshire. It cuts through a major lead field around Langthwaite and was the site of several mines in the late seventeenth century.
John Woodward refers frequently to "Arkendale" in cases where the mine in question is the Moulds mine(s) in Arkengarthdale. There doesn't seem to have been any lead mining in or around the village of Arkendale, Yorkshire, in the seventeenth century; and it appears that sometimes (confusingly) "Arkendale" might have been used to refer to the mine(s) in Arkengarthdale (See e.g. 1896 Mines Inspectors Report (C 8450), Durham District (No. 4) by R. D. Bain, H.M. Inspector of Mines). URL:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkengarthdale Location contains: Moulds Mine (Mine or Quarry)
