P.519 Extract – The Matter or Substance of this precious piece of
Antiquity, is granite of the prime Quality: its form is this [diagram] & if it were perfect at the end, c, it would then appear to be
the Section, taken lengthways, of a vase of this form [diagram] for without doubt the other side corresponded with it as to form,
Dimension & ornaments. The whole piece from the point a to the end c is
7 feet long the width 2 feet & the fl at part of an uniform Thickness of
nearly 10 Inches: its weight 20 hundr &c. Whatsoever
it is or may have been when whole & entire, it appears to be the most
precious & curious piece of Antiquity that we have seen in our Travels,
