John Balchen, Sir (1670 - 1744)

Naval officer with a long and distinguished career, reaching the rank of Admiral on 11 August 1743. He died in the wreck of the HMS Victory under his command off the Casquets in the Channel Islands.

In 1723, Balchen leased the mansion formerly occupied by the Copes in Little Chelsea (Beaver, 333-4; Bryan, 65). He is listed among the beneficiaries of Salter's museum.
