Joseph Pitton de Tournefort, Dr. (5 Jun 1656 - 28 Dec 1708)
French botanist, academic, and collector, appointed professor of botany at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris in 1683. William Courten visited him in Paris along with Sloane, who was tutored by Tournefort and maintained a lifelong friendship and correspondence with him. Sherard studied with Tournefort from 1686 to 1688 (Jacquot, 87, n. 10).
