John Munden, Vice Admiral (c. 1645 - 1719)

A benefactor and donor of objects to Salter's museum. Identified as "Sir J. Munden" in the 1631 version, as "Mr. Munden" in later versions.

According to the Gentleman's Magazine (1799), "Vice Admiral Munden and other officers who had been much upon the coasts of Spain, enriched" Salter's museum "with many curiosities, and gave the owner the name of Don Saltero" (160). Macky describes him as "a very plain Man in his Conversation and Dress, of a fair Complexion, towards seventy Years old" and as being "much esteemed, til being sent to the Coast of Spain, to intercept Du Casse at Counna, his Neglect of that Affair brought him into Disgrace" (172). Knighted by William III on 1 July 1701.

A resident of Church Street, he as among the original trustees of Petyt School in 1717 and an active parishioner (Beaver, 108 and 111).
