William Douglas, 1st Duke of Queensberry (1637 - 1695)

Scottish nobleman and politician. Created 1st Duke of Queensberry on 11 February 1682. Succeeded by James Douglas 2nd Duke of Queensberry and 1st Duke of Dover (18 Dec 1662 - 6 Jul 1711) in March 1695. Sibbald's reference could be to either of these. The seat of the Dukes was at Drumlanrig Castle. The first Duke leased out lands in the upper part of the Wanlock valley to mining interests in 1675, and mining continued until 1683 (Harvey and Downs-Rose, 22-23).
