In Search of Edward Lhuyd
Secondary Title (i.e. Proceedings Title): Periodical Title:Archives of Natural History Publication Type:Journal Article Authors:Roberts,Brynley F.Editors: Publisher: Place of Publication: Publication Date:1989 Alternate Date (i.e. Conference Date): Volume:16 Issue:1 Start Page:49 End Page:57 Abstract:Describes the gradual rediscovery since the late 18th century of the naturalist Edward Lhuyd (1660-1709), born in Shropshire and educated at Jesus College, Oxford, who wrote on the antiquities, menhirs, cromlechs, forts, and inscriptions of Wales for Gibson's edition of 'Camden's Encyclopaedia. Archaeologia Britannica,' on British languages, was the first volume of an intended series on culture and natural history, but Lhuyd died before its completion. His researches were forgotten until William Huddersford of the Ashmolean Library wrote a biography of Lhuyd in the 18th century. As his correspondence, notes, and papers reemerged, together with the works of his contemporaries, Lhuyd was seen in the context of his times; his fame was established with Richard Ellis's essay (1907) and Gunther's 'Life and Letters' (1945).
