According to 17th century maps of Africa, the region of Guinea appears to run approximately from modern Sierra Leone to the modern border of Cameroon, and encompassed the current countries of Liberia, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, and Benin, and parts of Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Nigeria. The present boundaries of Guinea were note determined until the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
