George Wheler (20 Jan 1651 n.s. - 15 Jan 1724 ns.)

Alias George [Alias] Wheeler
Clergyman, travel writer, and collector of plants and manuscripts. He became a student at Middle Temple in 1671 and became M.A. in 1683 and D.D. in 1702. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1677 (expelled in 1685) and was knighted on 1 Sep 1682. He traveled with Jacques Spon through France, Italy, Greece, and Asia Minor from 1675 to 1676 and published his account of Greece in 1682. He donated his manuscripts to Lincoln College and his plant specimens to the Oxford Physic Garden. Ray, Morison, and Plukenet all received plant specimens from Wheler (Pulteney, 1.359).
