George Goring (28 Apr 1585 - 6 Jan 1663)

English soldier, politician (member of the House of Commons between 1621 and 1628), was knighted in 1608. A favourite at court, he was created Baron Goring in 1628, and became a privy councillor in 1639 and Vice-Chamberlain of the Household. He was a political ally of Buckingham and participated in Charles I's marriage negotiations.

Goring is named as a benefactor in Musaeum Tradescantianum. Leith-Ross notes that Goring is one of of a few benefactor "who had been further elevated before the Musaeum Tradescantianum's publication, having been made Earl of Norwich in 1644" (168). According to Leith-Ross, "he could perhaps have been the source of some of the South American items," given his involvement in an initiative to colonize the mouth of the Amazon River (168). In his will, Tradescant the Elder entrusted Goring to distribute a sum of 150 pounds to his grandchildren (Allan, 175).
