St Katharine's by the Tower

London (Settlement), England

Description of institution: Medieval church and hospital next to the Tower of London, founded in 1147. In the early modern period, "[t]here were ... 1,000 houses (including a brewery) in its precinct, inhabited by foreigners, vagabonds and prostitutes, crammed along narrow lanes (with names like Dark Entry, Cat’s Hole, Shovel Alley, Rookery and Pillory Lane)" (Wikipedia).

Courten references a widow "at St. Katherines." This could be any number of settlements in England (spelled with a "C"), but the familiarity of his reference suggests a location more local.
