"The knuckles of the legg bone of mutton, which we call a cockal, with which children used to play; such an one dugg out of the ruins, in brass, that showeth the Romans used them in games called Ludi talarii". Ludi talarii translates roughly as a kind of dice game. Talarii means of or pertaining to the ankles' and Ludi is the name given to the games festival which was held in Rome in September every year.]
