A large rip in the large leather purse reveals a sample of tawed leather sewn into the side possibly as an inner, safer, coin pocket. Tawed leather is white in colour and has been produced from placing the skins in a solution of salt and alum, a whitish, transparent mineral salt, very astringent. The end product is a white leather known as "alum", "white" or "Hungarian Leather".] (mid 17th cent)
