Annotation:[Canterbury Catalog: A collection of 40 commemorative medals many of which were manufactured by Claude Warin at Lyons in the later half of the 17th century. Claude Warin was the less illustrious brother of Jean Warin, controleur general of the French Mint at Paris from 1647, who was one of the foremost medallists of the Renaissance. Amongst the most significant are medals of: the Persian king, Cyrus; the Greek law-giver Solon; the Greek philosopher, Arristipus; Roman politican and murderer of Julius Caesar, Marcus Junius Brutus; Roman politican, lawyer, and philosopher, Marcus Tullius Cicero; the Roman politican and general, Gaius Marius; the Roman politican and general, Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus 'Pompey'; the Roman general, Scipio Africanus; the Roman philosopher, Seneca; the Roman dictator, Lucius Cornelius Sulla; one of the founders of the Roman Republic, Lucius Junius Brutus; the Emperor Trajan and his son, Hadrian; the Renaissance painter and sculptor, Michelangelo; the Renaissance painter and architect, Raphael; the early Renaissance painter and architect, Giulio Romano; and the Renaissance painter, Titian. Other noteworthy examples are those of the Goddess Roma, a Bacchanalian Feast, the Town House at Lyons, Louis XIV of France, Anne of Austria, Louis XIV with Anne of Austria, and Pope Alexander VII. The condition of some medals has rendered them unidentifiable. For further details about this collection see M. James, 'Una Serie Completa Di Ritratti Di Grandi Uomini Dell'Antichita Ed Artisti Del Rinascimento Eseguiti Da Claude Warin', Medaglia, Anno 11, Numero 18 (1983), pp.49-61.] (17th cent)
