John Berkenhead (1617 - 1679)

Poet and pioneering journalist. Entered Oriel College, Oxford, in 1632, admitted to All Soul's College, receiving an M.A. in 1639 and becoming a fellow at the same time (1639-1648). William Laud was his patron and employer. He founded Mercurius Aulicus, a weekly "intelligencer" and England's first official news-book, which ran from January 1643 to September 1645. Probably the "John Berkenhead" who donated "An Indian Cows Tayle from Bantam" to the Oxford Anatomy School collection (9).
