Jonathan Priestley (1634 - 27 Jul 1705)

He was described in The Nonconformist Register as "a solid Christian of considerable Piety and usefulness" (237). Thoresby writes of his "old friend" and describes this incident: "My Friend Mr. Jonathan Priestley's MS. Additions to Mr. Turner's History of Providences, furnishes us with a later Instance [of a giant], and a Native of England, Jeremiah Street (a Wiltshire man born), who, May 22. 1703. was shew'd publicly at Halifax, for his extraordinary Stature, I could, saith he (who is himself a proper Person), stand under his Arm-hole, and above an Inch to spare, and with my Hand could just reach the top of his Head. He was seven Foot and five Inches high, but corpulent and unhealthy, and falling sick at Bradford, was interred there 13 June" (Ducatus Leodiensis, 611, 621). "Jonathan Priestley, who writ the preceding memoirs of the Priestleys, was born in the year 1633, and died in 1705, aged 72" (Jackson).
