Richard Swanley, Captain (1594/5 - 1650)
Naval officer, achieving the rank of admiral, serving under John Weddell as captain of the Sun, the James, and the Jonas. Not to be confused with a Captain Richard Swanley who was captain in the East India Company and hailing from Framilode, Gloucestershire. This is probably the "Captain Swanley" who is a named benefactor of the Tradescant collection. Leith-Ross goes a step further and says this is the same Captain Swanley who commanded the Diana on which Tradescant sailed to Archangel with Dudley Digges in 1617 (173). According to the OED, however, Swanley was not promoted to Captain until 1628.
