Joseph Dawson (1636 - 1709)

Dissenting minister. The son of Abraham Dawson, clothier in Leeds, Dawson matriculated from University College, Oxford 1652 and then admitted into St John's College, Cambridge, graduating BA in 1657. He as curate of Thornton, near Bradford, Yorkshire ca.1657 until ejection for nonconformity in 1662. He then moved between Landimere, Northowram, Cross Stone, Sowerby, and Coley, Yorkshire. He was licensed as a Presbyterian in Halifax and Birstall in 1672. After 1688 Act of Toleration, he became minister of Old Chapel, Morley, Yorkshire until his death 26 June 1709. The name of his wife is not known, but he had seven sons, six of whom became dissenting ministers (GEMMS-PERSON-21403).
