Albrecht Dürer (1471 - 1528)

Dance has an entry for Dürer in "The Art of Natural History". Dance states that as the "[s]on of a Hungarian goldsmith, Dürer was born in Nuremberg and died there. His impressive woodcut designs began to appear in 1498. His 'Triumphal Arch' was made up of 92 blocks and is the largest known woodcut (it measures about 335 x 305 cms). Executed about 200 woodcuts altogether, in addition to about 100 copper plates, many pen and ink drawings, watercolours and oil paintings. Work is characterized by great fidelity, delicacy and finish." Dance, Peter S. "The Art of Natural History." Woodstock, N.Y: Overlook P, 1978. 215. Print.
