Richard Crashaw, (1612/13 - 1648)

Poet, the son of William Crashawe or Crashaw (bap. 1572, d. 1625/6), preacher, polemicist, and devotional writer. Crashaw received a BA at Pembroke in 1634 and moved to Peterhouse in 1635, where he was elected to a fellowship. John Bargrave knew Crashaw at Cambridge. Bargrave writes in his College of Cardinals: When I went first of my 4 times to Rome, there were there 4 Revolters to the Roman Church, that had binn fellowes of Peterhowse in Cambrige with my selfe, The name of one of them was Mr. R. Crashaw, whoe was of the Seguita (as theire terme is, that is an attendant or one of the followers) of this Cardinall, for wch he had a salary of crownes by the month (as the custome is) but no dyet. Mr. Crashaw infinitely commended his Cardinal but complayned extreamely of the wickedness of those of his Retinue, of which he hauing the Cardinalls eare, complayned to him, vpon which the Italians fell so farr owt with him, that the Cardinall to secure his life was fain to putt him from his seruice, and procuring him some small Imploy at the Lady's of Loretto, whether [sic] he went in Pilgrimage in summer time and was dowbtfull whether he were not poysoned.
