Sir Henry Cary, Viscount of Falkland (c. 1575 - 1633)

English landowner, politician (member of the House of Commons from 1601 to 1622), and patron of the arts. He was created Viscount Falkland in the Scottish peerage in 1620. He was "made Comptroller of the Household under Buckingham, which position he sold in 1622, buying with the proceeds a six-mile-wide section of Newfoundland. His colony failed because of the inexperience of those sent out, but he enjoyed profits from it both in trade and fishing, the latter industry then employing an astonishing 250 ships and 10,000 men from England" (Leith-Ross, 168). He was lord-deputy of Ireland from 1622 until 1629.

He is named as a benefactor in Musaeum Tradescantianum. According to Leith-Ross, Cary and David Kirke are likely sources of the very early Canadian material in the collection: "In February 1638 Kirke took out to Newfoundland John Scandouer, the King's deer-keeper, 'to take and bring over some dere for His Majesty'" (Leith-Ross, 168).
