John Kirkby, Bishop of Ely ( - 1290)

English ecclesiastic and statesman, Vice-Chancellor and Lord Treasurer under Henry II, probably responsible for various reforms in the treasury and exchequer. He directed a survey of various English counties, known as Kirkby's "Quest" or "Inquest," to investigate debts owed to the king.
