Thomas Calvert (c. 1607 - 1679)

Mentioned but not clearly identified by Thoresby (533). There are two strong candidates. Thomas Calvert (c. 1607-1679) was a local ejected minister at “Alhallows Pavement” parish church (possibly All Saints') and author of a series of lectures on Isaiah 53 titled Mel cæli, medulla evangelii, or, The prophet Isaiah's crucifix (1657). He also had a hand in publishing Blessed Jew of Morocco, or, a Blackamoor turned White (1648), by Rabbi Marochitanus Samuel, among other works. A biography by Rev. Timothy Hodson survives in a letter from the author to Ralph Thoresby, dated 15 April 1702 (Hunter, 1: 404-408). Thoresby's vague reference suggests a lack of immediate connection and is in association with extracts of James VI's (James I of England) Basilicon Doron (1599, 1603), a context closer, at least chronologically, to Thomas than to the next candidate. James Calvert (d. Dec. 1698) was also an ejected minister and nephew of Thomas Calvert, born in the Pavement of York.
