John Burnell ( - fl. 1715)

British governor of Dongri (Dungarey) Fort in Mumbai, known at the time as Bombay. An autograph ms formerly in the British India Office in Bombay, but subsequently lost, was “dated 1709-1710, containing the History of Bombay writ by John Burnell Esq. lately Governor of Dungarey Fort … who presented it to the celebrated R. Thoresby” (Sheppard, x). A copy of this manuscript is the basis of Samuel T. Sheppard’s edition, Bombay in the Days of Queen Anne (London: Hakluyt Society, 1933).
