Anthony (Captain) Wood, Captain ( - fl. 1628)

Captain of a ship named the Rainbow and courier for Sir Thomas Roe. In a 1621 letter to Arundel, Thomas Roe describes sending him objects via Antony Wood, captain of the Rainbow (16). Wood was used by Roe and others in the region for diplomatic communication (695, 785, 825). Leith-Ross suggests that while it is possible that this is the 'Captain Wood' listed among the benefactors" of the Tradescants' museum, the more likely candidate is John Wood who was connected with the Guinea Company and was enlisted by the Duke of Buckingham to acquire desired objects from Africa (78, 81, 166). John Wood, however, is identified as a merchant, rather than a captain, as designated in Tradescants' list of benefactors. It may be that John Tradescant the Younger conflated these two in his report of benefactors. Agent - courier
