Robert Offley (1567 - 4 Nov 1631)

Merchant and member of the Leathersellers Company of London, the Virginia Company, the East Indies Company, the Northwest Passage Company, and the Levant Company, and founding member of the Somers Island Company. According to his monument inscription at St Mary Aldermanbury Churchyard, he was son of Hugh Offley, alderman of London, was married to Elizabeth the daughter of Humfrey Street and died on 4 November 1631 at the age of 64. According to Leith-Ross, Robert is probably the "Mr. Ofley" named as a benefactor in Museaum Tradescantianum, rather than his brother Thomas, suggesting further that he is the same Robert Offley "who was a gentleman volunteer with Tradescant on the Mediterranean expedition of 1620" (175). She also suggests the brothers "helped to create the Eastland Company, which traded from Elbing with the lands around the Baltic," but this is unlikely given that the Company was founded in 1579 (ibid.).
