Annotation:Firth states in the preface that "The objects of the narrative is to vindicate the reputation of Venables as a general, and to prove that the disasters which befell the expedition under his command were due to the fault of others.... The narrative contains also an account of the imprisonment of Venables in the Tower, and of his examination by Cromwell's council" (vi).
Venables's narrative is found in papers collected by Thomas Povey (Add. MS. 11410) as well as papers collected by Edward Long (Add. MS. 12429) both now reside in the British Library. There is also a briefer, earlier and imperfect version of Venables's narrative held in 1900 by a Mr. Lee Townshend of Gorstage Hall, Cheshire.
The Appendix (Appendix E) is a transcription of part of Henry Whistler's Travel Journal detailing his experience in the same expedition.
