Annotation:In the chapter on the Royal Society (ch. 4) Ornstein examines the founding documents of the society, their mandate, and institution of the Society museum (107-116). Interestingly, the key functionary of the society was called a "curator," who (quoting from the Society's statues) "shall be to take care of the managing of all experiments and observations appointed--examining of science, arts, inventions; bringing in histories of natural and artificial things. Every...curator...shall be...knowing in philosophy and mathematical learning, addicted to and well versed in observations, inquiries, and experiments concerning natural and artificial things" (109-110). Robert Hooke was appointed the first curator.
