Annotation:"In a letter dates the 1st of September, 1680, written by Sir Thomas Herbert at York, to Ashmole, with whom he had become acquainted in his travels, I find that the latter had then returned to Tradescant's house, in South Lambeth. Herbert writes as follows:--'I find by your letter that you do not frequent the Court as you have formerly, having retyred yourself to you house in South Lambeth, a place I well know, having seen several times at M. Tredescant [sic] (to whom I gave severall things I collected in my travels), and was much delighted with his gardens, so as you have sequestered yourself to a place of much pleasure as well as privacy'" (249-50).
