Description of institution: A town in the seventeenth century, now incorporated within the City of Wakefield. Oliver Cromwell took residence in Knottingley during the three Sieges of Pontefract Castle. Some of Cromwell's letters from Knottingley were published in Oliver Cromwell's Letters and Speeches, edited by Thomas Carlyle (1845).
