John Chorlton (1666 - 16 May 1705)

Nonconformist minister and “VDM” verbi divini minister (Minister of the Divine Word) in Ralph Thoresby's annotation. On 7 August 1687, Chorlton became assistant to Henry Newcome at Cross Street Chapel, Manchester, and then succeeded Newcome upon his death in 1695. At Newcome's request, Chorlton preached his funeral sermon. Oliver Heywood (then aged sixty-six) was invited to join Chorlton in the ministry at Cross Street Chapel, but declined.

Chorlton was prepared for the ministry at Richard Frankland's academy, then at Natland, near Kendal (entering on 4 April 1682), and he preached Frankland's funeral sermon on his death in October 1698.
