William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Devonshire (25 Jan 1640/1 - 18 Aug 1707)

English Army officer, politician, and peer who sat in the House of Commons from 1661 until 1684 when he inherited his father's peerage as Earl of Devonshire and took his seat in the House of Lords.

Possibly the Cavendish who signed Thoresby's guestbook in 1704. Thoresby's later annotation of Cavendish's entry, "of ... Com: Derb: Arm:", seems to indicate that this Cavendish was a military commander, but at the same time indicates Thoresby can't specify his home. It seems strange that Thoesby would highlight Cavendish's military role rather than the peerage of such a distinguished guest. The motto supplied in the visitor book entry, "Cavendo Tuyus," is that of the Cavendish Dukedom of Devonshire. Cavendish was also an original Fellow of the Royal Society but was expelled in 1685.
