Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury (1 Jun 1563 - 24 May 1612)

Politician and courtier. He was "perhaps the person who first aroused Tradescant's collecting instincts" when, in 1607, he "had dispatched a young man on an East India Company ship to 'go for parrots, monkeys and marmosets'" (Leith-Ross, 164). Tradescant himself acquired for Cecil "an artificial bird and a great buffalo's horn" in France (164).
