Dudley Carleton, 1st Viscount Dorchester (10 Mar 1573 - 15 Feb 1632)

Art collector, diplomat, and Secretary of State. Around 1615, while ambassador at The Hague, Carleton began acquiring objects for Arundel, "to whom he sent such presents as a 'Jupiter's head, a very fine bason of stone, wth an Ewer alla anticha, Aeneas flying from ye sack of Troy" (MacGregor, 33). On behalf of Buckingham, with the help of agent George Gage, "he arranged the exchange for marbles of Rubens' famous collection of pictures and tapestries and also sought out pictures for Arundel" (Leith-Ross, 167). Carleton's own collection was begun in 1603 "with the amassing of manuscripts for his father-in-law, Sir Henry Savile, in Paris (MacGregor, 33). "During his time in the Low Countries Dorchester met many talented artists, introducing their work to his patrons at home (Leith-Ross, 167).

He was also a benefactor of the Tradescants' collection.
