Edward Nicholas (4 Apr 1593 - 1669)
English politician who served as Secretary of State to Charles I and Charles II and a secretary of the Admiralty. MacGregor deduces, "His benefaction... must have taken place between 1625 and 1641" (32). He served under Buckingham when the latter became Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. According to Leith-Ross, "He had a great interest in books and pictures and he collected portraits of the celebrities of the day" (175).
