Sir John Cope, 5th Baron ( - d. 11 June 1721)

Descendant of Sir Anthony Cope, 1st Baronet (c. 1548 – 6 July 1614) and his Brother, Walter Cope, the collector. Cope traveled extensively in his youth. He matriculated at Queen's College, Oxford, on 10 November 1651 and had a command at Dunkirk when it was taken by the French in 1662 (Cokayne, 37). He was member of parliament for the county of Oxford and of Banbury (variously from 1679-1699) and Director of the Bank of England 1695-1702. He was evidently living in or near Chelsea in 1690, when his son Galen (an office in the army, then a clergyman) was baptized in the Parish (Faulkner, II.122.) In 1705 he was living in Little Chelsea (a hamlet a mile southwest of Chelsea) in what John Bowack (1705) characterizes as "a Regular, handsome House, with a noble Court Yard, and good Gardens." He describes Cope as "a Gentleman of an Ancient Honourable Family, who formerly was eminent for the Service of his Country Abroad, and for many Years of late, in Parliament, till he voluntarily retir'd here to end his Days in Peace" (15). Cope is listed as a Justice of the Peace for Chelsea in 1718 (Political State, 414) According to Benning, Cope died at Bramshill Park (House), which his son purchased in 1699 as the new family seat, with help from a loan by his father. He was buried at Eversley, Hampshire, and was succeeded by his elder son, John.

Beaver cites Sir John Cope elder and younger as apparently being among "the first generous benefactors" of Salter's collection (204).
